Steel towers
Most modern wind turbines have tubular towers made of steel. Their conic shape (diameter tapers from bottom to top) enhances their stability and helps save material. Steel towers are usually comparatively easy to transport and can be erected quickly.
Lattice towers
Lattice towers made from steel are the most cost-effective option. Materials consumption is only half of that for a free-standing steel tube tower, and ready-made profiles can often be used. Today, lattice towers are rarely used, however.
Concrete towers
With the help of prefabrication, the formerly long construction times for concrete towers can be reduced today. Very high towers can also be erected with ready-made parts. Concrete towers do not face severe transportation difficulties. They are cheaper than steel towers.
Hybrid towers
At some sites as in forests, the erection of large towers is often hindered by logistical difficulties. This can be solved by using towers that are constructed with modules such as hybrid towers which consist of several segments (e.g. concrete and steel). These segments are easy to transport and assemble.
